Go to New to running?

New to running?

In these unprecedented times you have to look for the positives and keeping active is one of these.

Improving your fitness has many benefits, an increase in cardiovascular function, improved immunity and improved mood. At present the Government allows everyone to go outside for one session of daily exercise and many people are choosing to run and why not as all it requires is a good pair of trainers and the great outdoors. So now is no better time to give it a go.

For the novice the hardest part is stepping out of the front door but there are apps out there to get you started. One of the best is 'One You Couch to 5k', a free program developed by Public Health England. This is a simple 9 week program that will progress you slowly and progressively in half an hour blocks so by the end you will be able to run non stop for thirty minutes.

Patience is the key because the easiest way to fail or injury yourself is if you have never run, is to go out for the first time and to try and run continuously. One you will feel exhausted and terrible and secondly you will not feel like trying it again! Your body needs time to adapt. You need time to build your cardiovascular fitness and muscular endurance. If you overload a muscle in the gym it can lead to injury. It is the same with running, too much too soon can result in injury. So please download the app and give it a go!

Remember when you are out there, however slow you are, you are still lapping everyone on the couch !
