Falls Prevention Service

Having a fall can be both frightening and life changing, especially following illness or with ageing. The risk doubles after the first fall and the fear of it happening, can create a vicious cycle. This in turn can affect both physical and mental capacity,  leading to isolation and depression as you or that loved one becomes more and more risk adverse.

Fear of getting up to make a drink or using the bathroom can lead to dehydration which in turn can increase the risk of falling. Other causes are loss of balance and mobility, muscle weakness and hazards around the house.

Falling is not inevitable and there are many ways that our physio team can assist in reducing the risk.

Lesley and Lindsey are two members of our physiotherapy team who have extensive experience in rehabilitation in the elderly and will arrange to visit you or your loved ones at home. They have both worked with the local NHS trust for many years, have knowledge on how to connect you to services offered by local authorities and can also point you in the right direction for what’s available for you within the community.

What happens next?

  • Make an appointment by calling the clinic on (01707) 329910. We will arrange for either Lesley or Lindsey to come to your home at a time which suits you.
  • They will talk to you in depth about any concerns that you have, and how you would like to benefit from their visit. They will also be able to establish whether you have any contributory health problems.
  • By coming to your home they can check for hazards around the house and can make recommendations to make your space safe
  • They can watch you move, and assess what may be contributing to your loss of balance or weakness. They can start with simple exercises that will help you transfer in and out of a chair or turn over and get out of bed, activities that are very functional and necessary for you to maintain independence.
