The Mummy MOT

In France women are routinely offered 10 appointments after childbirth to ensure they recover their strength and fitness; however this is not the case in the UK.  At the Physiotherapy Clinic (WGC) we are excited to be able to offer the Mummy MOT ®, carried out by our Women’s Health Physiotherapist Judy Bunney, which is an incredibly useful assessment for all women who have given birth.

It is ideally carried out from around 6 weeks post-natal but is still useful well beyond that too.  It’s an in-depth assessment of your posture and biomechanics as well as the pelvic floor and abdominal muscles and gives you a clear and safe plan for recovery and return to exercise.

The assessment also helps to identify any issues that might benefit from further Physiotherapy assessment and treatment.  It helps to prevent any long-term issues following childbirth.  In an ideal world all women would be offered this and we would prevent a lot of health problems in the Menopausal years and beyond.

The Mummy MOT comprises of a 1-hour assessment, following that a report will be sent detailing all the advice and exercise recommended for recovery.

Pelvic Floor Muscle Weakness

Muscles can become weak due to a number of factors including chronic constipation and straining and following pregnancy and childbirth.

An assessment and guidance on exercise is extremely helpful with up to 50% of people thought to do pelvic floor exercises incorrectly.

Bladder Dysfunction

Including urinary stress incontinence which affects 1 in 3 women (leaking on coughing, sneezing, laughing or exercising).  Physio can help stop this issue for around 75% of women.

Urgency and urge incontinence where pelvic floor exercises, bladder re-training and acupuncture can all be a big help.
